Grand
Prix of Spain |

|
Built
in 1986 and hosting its first Grand Prix
one year later, the circuit of Jerez is now
one of the most popular MotoGP venues and
the focal point for a city fanatical about
sport. Set in a slight valley in the south
of Spain, Jerez is blessed with consistently
good weather and beautiful scenery, it´s
numerous grandstands providing the perfect
viewing facilities for up to 250,000 spectators.
With two alternative road circuits (4,423m and 4,428m), which have been
resurfaced during the off-season, Jerez is a popular venue used by many
race teams for testing throughout the year, whilst it´s recently
updated corporate and media facilities have proven to be a popular addition
to the complex. Other facilities such as the 'space ship' control tower
and pit boxes have also been vastly improved, along with a huge new parking
area nearby. |

In 1989, through
the joint collaboration of the Catalan
Autonomous Government, the Montmeló Town
Council and the Royal Automobile Club
of Catalunya (RACC), work began on
giving one of Europe´s most beautiful
cities a state of the art race track
to match. The Circuit de Catalunya
opened on the doorstep of Barcelona
in September 1991 and welcomed its
first international event that same
month, hosting the Spanish F1 Grand
Prix.
It went on to host the European
Motorcycle Grand Prix and in 1995 became
home to the Gran Premio de Catalunya.
Considered to be one of the best designed
circuits of the recent era, the Circuito
de Catalunya won the much coveted IRTA ´Best
Grand Prix´ trophy for 2001 and
has a general admission capacity of
104,000.

The Circuito de la
Comunitat Valenciana was completed in
1999 and held rounds of the MotoGP and
Spanish Motorcycle Championships in the
same year. The Cheste track has several
layouts, running anticlockwise with varying
lengths. MotoGP events are held on a
4km track comprising of five right handed
corners, eight left handers and a 650m
straight.
Although the track is regarded
as quite small, the pit complex contains
48 garages whilst the stadium style grandstands
can seat up to 150,000 spectators. The
circuit layout helps to create a unique
atmosphere enjoyed by Spanish and international
riders alike for the 1st round of the
World Superbike and
last MotoGP round of the season there
is always a party feeling here for everyone.

The circuit
is situated close to Europe's most
south westerly tip about 10 mins from
Portugal's stunning Atlantic coastline
and the cosmopolitan town of Estoril.
Due to the clement weather in this area the beaches are in use pretty
much all year and the weather history
for March indicates dry, warm weather
with an average daylight temp of 15c
which means the mid-day track temp should
be a pleasant contrast to the UK and an ideal riding temperature.
The circuit lap begins
with a flowing right-hander that leads
directly into a rather wicked downhill
section that ends in a hairpin. From
there the track runs uphill to yet another
hairpin and down the back straight that
is neatly dissected by a little kink.
A long left-hander follows, then a short
straight that feeds into a uphill right-hander.
From there its a series of twists before
a very, very long right-hander feeds
the bikes back onto the start-finish
straight.

This new racing track at Mexilhoeira Grande near the coastal town of Portimão in southern Portugal and is due to host the final 2008 round of this season's World Supersport Championship, which is also running side-by-side with the World Superbike Championship, on November 2nd as its inaugural event and the pressure is on for the Parkalgar Honda home team composed of British rider Craig Jones and Portuguese rider Miguel Praia.
This new track has already been approved by the FIA for F1 car use and by the FIM for MotoGP and WSBK championships, along with a purpose built kart track will make this new track one of the best all year around testing track. The track layout is a mixture of the Ricardo Tormo circuit and the old Estoril circuit, with a very large start / finish grandstand like Estoril and a circular in field VIP tower similar to the Jerez tower, it's going to be a cracker.

Nothing, but nothing
in the motorcycling world comes close
to La Bañeza. Take a small,
very ordinary, rural town a long way
from anywhere in north-western Spain.
Throw up a few hundreds yards of plastic
tape and the odd straw bale. Pack the
streets 30,000 screaming fans, then
let loose a hundred classic and modern
bike racers for some fill blown, handlebar
banging competition. Not demonstrations
or nostalgia runs, but flat-out, short
circuit racing, where run-offs are
measured in millimetres and spectators
can and do reach out and touch the
riders as they race past !
The La Bañeza street races
started way back in 1949 and have transformed
this rural town into the centre of the
universe for the Spanish bike racers.
Racing happens annually in early
August as part of the Catholic festival
week, the locals go the whole hog with
bands, street theatre, and of course
the awesome Grand Prix de La Bañeza.
